    Preparing the Drogue

    Option 1: Play Tunnel Drogue

    1. Install 3 evenly spaced grommets into each end of each drogue section

    2. Attach drogue sections with s-hooks
      • open hooks with a table vise and screw-driver
      • close hooks with pliers

    3. Attach about 3 pounds ballast to the drogue
      • using the grommets and zip ties at the bottom of the drogue, evenly distribute weight
      • chain (pictured below), fishing weights, or shackles can act as ballast
      • note: a decision on how much weight should be attached as ballast can be made by testing the drifter with different amounts of weights, and a collapsed drogue (because testing area is likely shallow). Our weight test is featured below:

    4. Label the body of the drogue with basic information including:
      • phone number
      • "Drift Study"

    Option 2: Leaf Bag Drogue

    1. Cut or carefully tear the bottom out of two pop-up leaf bags
    2. Zip-Tie the two together
      • put a small piece of duct tape near the bottom ring of the bag in 4 locations equally spaced around the circumference
      • using a sharp pointed object, poke holes just big enough for the zip-tie through the tape and bag
      • secure the zip-tie tightly and cut-off the excess plastic

    3. Attach about 3 pounds ballast to the drogue
      • make holes in the drogue at 3 to 4 locations at the bottom of the drogue, evenly distributed with tape reinforcement as above
      • secure about 1 pound of weight at each location:
        • large shackles, fishing weights, or chain can act as ballast
      • see that the weights are secured with more zip ties or in such a way they will not slip radially and tear the drogue fabric
    4. Label the body of the drogue with basic information including:
      • phone number
      • "Drift Study"
