Condensed Instructions On Building a Drogued Drifter

“Tim” Play Tunnel Drifter

  1. Install 3 brass grommets in each end of two toddler play tunnels
  2. Label the drogue sections with your phone number and “Drift Study”
  3. Attach the 2 drogue sections together with brass S-hooks
  4. Zip-tie about 3 pounds ballast to bottom of drogue
  5. Make a 3-point bridle
    • using ⅛ inch wire, cut three lengths of wire about 5 inches longer than the diameter of the drogue
    • on top end of drogue, loop one end of each wire directly around a grommet
    • make normal loops on other ends of wire
    • shackle 3 free loops of bridle together
  6. Make an ⅛ inch wire tether of desired length
  7. Secure the tether to the bottom of the surface buoy with a shackle

“Colin” Leaf Bag Drifter

  1. Cut bottom out of two pop-up leaf bags
  2. Label the drogue sections with your phone number and “Drift Study”
  3. Reinforce the bottom rim of the bag material with small pieces of duct tape in 4 locations around the circumference
  4. Poke a hole through these duck-taped locations just big enough to fit a zip-tie-wrap
  5. Secure two bags together with zip-ties
  6. Zip-tie about 3 pounds ballast to bottom of drogue
  7. Make a 3-point bridle
    • using ⅛ inch wire, cut three lengths of wire about 5 inches longer than the diameter of the drogue
    • make loops at both ends of wire
    • secure the 3 ends of the bridle to the drogue using bull dogs (aka wire clips)
    • shackle 3 free loops of bridle together
  8. Make an ⅛ inch wire tether of desired length, and attach to bridle
  9. Secure the tether to the bottom of the surface buoy with a shackle
